Iconic

Do things become
iconic simply by calling them that?
The dictionary
defines iconic as something acknowledged
especially for its distinctive excellence.
The other day I
heard a reporter refer to Kanye West as an iconic
performer.
Is he? That
same reporter called his wife, Kim Kardashian, an
iconic fashionista.
Is she?
It seems everything
is labeled iconic these dayseven when
they clearly lack distinctive excellence.
Despite my chagrin
at the flagrant misuse of the term, I was
encouraged today when the host of a television
talk show referred to a well-known, if not
legendary, product as iconic.
In no way would I
argue that Hormels Spam is not
iconic.
