Scary Moment
by Marvin Pinkis
"What was
the scariest moment in your life?"
"I seem
to have one every day."
"Pick one."
"It would
have to be the time, the first time, they let me
out of the playpen."
"They?"
"The
staff at the 'Extremely Unwanted Children's Home.'"
"How old
were you?"
"Almost
six."
"Was it a
special occasion?"
"Well,
yes, the Home was on fire. I was the last kid to
be rescued. The firemen were just leaving."
"Any
lasting effects?"
"I won't
go near a playpen, Haven't for over thirty years.
I guess someday I'll have to deal with it."
"Probably.
It's hard to get through this vale of tears
without playpens playing a vital role."
