Who's Afraid of
Virginia Woolf?
(Only the Ones Who Do Not Read Her Work)
by Alex Andy Phuong
Who's Afraid of
Virginia Woolf? remains one of the most
celebrated (but also controversial) dramatic
works in American theater. The equally
famous film adaptation earned Elizabeth Taylor
her second Academy Award. Despite the title,
is there really a need to be afraid, though?
It is true that Virginia Woolf committed suicide
at the relatively young age of 59, but her
beautifully exquisite writing help transform
literature by directly addressing modernity.
Sure, some people do not enjoy her work, but
beauty really is within the eye of the beholder
when it comes to what is "art."
Not only that, but abstract concepts might be
provocative, but life itself is very simple.
Wake up, do things, fall asleep. Writing is
powerful, but all people are still creatures in
the animal kingdom nevertheless. Therefore,
there is no need to fear Virginia Woolf (nor any
other book or author) because a book really is
just a book. Students who do not
complete reading assignments are definitely in
trouble academically, but after school is over,
reading is completely optional. Graduate,
and move on in life, and that is the reality of
life after finishing school.
